Elbow Dislocation

Elbow dislocation most often occurs during a fall on an outstretched arm/hand leading to excessive force on the elbow. An elbow dislocation is a complex injury and should be assessed by an Orthopedic Surgeon.

Causes and risk factors

  • Trauma, commonly due to a fall

  • On rare occasions patients may have increased joint laxity or other conditions that might contribute to an increased risk

Symptoms

  • Pain in the arm

  • Bruising

  • Swelling

  • Numbness

  • Deformity to the elbow

  • Difficulty with range of motion

Diagnosis and treatment

An elbow dislocation requires a reduction which is generally performed in an emergency department. Subsequently, you should follow up with an orthopedic surgeon for further treatment. Most simple elbow dislocations can be treated nonsurgically but do require prolonged treatment and therapy. More complex dislocations such as those that also entail a fracture often require surgical treatment. Dr. Holt we will review your injury, treatment options and expectations to develop an optimal plan to recovery.
